The new Pulsar dB50 is a development that has evolved over the past 3 years. In 2007 Pulsar was asked by a large UK Water Company to provide equipment to monitor the level of a very deep pumping station. All other suppliers of ultrasonic level measurement equipment had declined the job. The underground wet-well is over 30m deep and has cross-bracing
internal support beams at 6m intervals. The surface of the liquid was very turbulent at times with, almost always, a very frothy surface, together with walkways, ladder, pipes and chains all adding to the difficulty of reliable measurement in the confined area.

Having looked at the application it was decided that not only was the beam angle of the transducer critical but extra power was required.
After several weeks of R&D effort, Pulsar engineers developed a Super version of the dB40 to tackle the job.
This was installed in July 2007 and after a day on site to install and commission the set-up, the Super dB40 was shown to work well and successfully controlled the pump station in all conditions. Over the past two years this transducer has been refined and improved even
further.
Following successful application in several long range solids applications and further test evaluations, including ones where it successfully replaced both Siemens LR400 and 460 radar products on limestone and also plastic pellet applications, it was decided to launch the new design as the dB50 transducer in this year’s price list.
The transducer is physically exactly the same as the existing dB40 but has more sophisticated electronics inside, and currently requires a “special” Ultra to power it.
At present the dB50 has no flammable atmosphere approval but if volumes increase it will be submitted for approval in the future. It is also scheduled to be added to the mainstream transducer list in standard electronic controllers in the Ultra range in the next revision.
The transducer is very powerful, sounds completely different to a dB40, and as a “party piece” demonstration on any exhibi-tion stand provides a spectacular ability to vaporise water placed on its transmission face.
